OUTLOOK: The Lions lost their head coach and leading scorer since last season ended. Bryan Bartley resigned as coach and he’s been replaced by Merideth Drake. She inherits a team that lost its go-to scorer, Amber Skidgel. Skidgel, a junior who transferred to Archer, averaged 21.7 points last season, trailing only Naismith national player of the year Diamond DeShields of Norcross among Gwinnett players. Filling that offensive void will be tough, but Drake is eager to rebuild the program around a big group of juniors who return from a state playoff team. Ashleigh Stanley, Hannah Lentz, Brooke Davis and Jozie Lewis are expected to step up their scoring this season, while fellow juniors Tatum Williams and Lexi Kent also are important players.

WORTH NOTING: Lewis was the team’s second-leading rebounder behind Skidgel last season. Stanley and Lentz were the two leaders in assists. … Bartley left his position as girls basketball coach and athletic director for a job at Montrose Christian (Md.). He went 30-26 in his two seasons with the Lions. … Drake, a Dacula grad, is an elementary music teacher at Hebron.

FAST FACT: Hebron returned to the state playoffs last season after missing out in Bartley’s first season. The Lions had a very successful run under previous coach Betsy Hensley, reaching the state playoffs from 2005-2008 with one state Final Four appearance.
