GAC Girls Basketball Season Preview

COACH: Cal Boyd

2012-13 RECORD: 21-8

RETURNING REGULARS:

Sydni Means, 5-6, Sr.

Brianna Cummings, 5-10, Sr.

OTHERS TO WATCH:

Brenna Miller, 5-10, Soph.

Clarke Permanter, 5-9, Soph.

Lexi Mann, 6-0, Fr.

OUTLOOK: The Spartans will be extremely young and inexperienced — outside of two positions. And those two are very experienced. Seniors Sydni Means and Brianna Cummings, two of the state’s top players, are the clear leaders of an otherwise youthful team. Means, a point guard who has committed to Mercer, averaged 6.1 assists (second-best in Gwinnett) last season. Cummings, headed to George Washington, is the team’s top returning scorer (18.5, tied for fourth in Gwinnett) and rebounder (9.0, third in Gwinnett). Those two players will be surrounded by a pack of newcomers led by sophomores Brenna Miller and Clarke Permanter, as well as 6-foot freshman post Lexi Mann. Head coach Cal Boyd said this team’s success depends on its ability to defend and create easy opportunities on offense.

WORTH NOTING: All eight of Greater Atlanta Christian’s losses last season came to powerhouse teams — three to Class AA state champion Wesleyan and one to AAAAAA unbeaten Parkview included. The loss to Parkview came in the finals of the Panthers’ pre-Thanksgiving tournament. … In addition to graduation’s effect, the Spartans also lost Cosette Mahre off its 2012-13 team. Mahre, now a junior and a top 3-point shooter, now attends St. Paul’s School (N.H.), where her younger sister Madison is a top ice hockey prospect.

FAST FACT: The Spartans have won 20 or more games every season since 2003-04 with a high of 32 wins during the 2006-07 state championship season. In four seasons under Boyd, they have won 26, 25, 20 and 21 games.
