Jason Carter, the grandson of President Jimmy Carter, announced a 2014 gubernatorial campaign Thursday.

Carter, a Democrat, is challenging Republican Gov. Nathan Deal in his re-election bid.

“Georgia has an opportunity for a fresh start, and now has fresh ideas for the future at the top of the ticket,” state Democratic Party chair Dubose Porter said, celebrating the announcement.

Jason Carter, a state senator, is seeking the Democratic nomination for next year’s ballot, before going on to seek the office that propelled his grandfather to the White House.

The move prompted Sen. Connie Stokes, the only other Democrat to begin a campaign for the governor’s office, to announce she would run alongside Carter, seeking the lieutenant governor’s office instead.

Deal also faces Republican challengers Dalton Mayor David Pennington and State School Superintendent John Barge in the GOP primary.
