Widespread illness causes Gwinnett school to close Friday

LILBURN — For the first time this school year, a Gwinnett school is closing for a day because of a widespread illness.

Knight Elementary at 401 North River Road in Lilburn will be closed on Friday because more than 80 students were affected by a gastroenteritis. When more than 10 percent of a student body is absent, district officials look into closing the school. Gwinnett County Public Schools spokeswoman Sloan Roach said many students complained of symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea.

“A number of students also went home from school today with similar symptoms,” Roach said.

The school’s enrollment is about 720 students.

The school system and Gwinnett County Health Department work closely on incidents like this, and Roach said the Health Department recommended the school close because the illness spreads very easily in a school setting. It’s the only school affected by the closure.

Roach said she anticipates that the school will open as usual on Monday.
