One of the four principal vacancies in Gwinnett County Public Schools was filled on Thursday night at a specially called school board meeting.
District officials appointed Benjamin Pope as the new principal at Riverside Elementary. Pope has been an assistant principal at Hull Middle since 2011, and was previously an assistant principal at Trickum Middle from 2009-11. Pope replaces Craig Barlow, who had been the principal at Riverside since 2001.
Barlow was recently promoted to be an assistant superintendent for elementary schools.
Pope is a 2013 graduate of the district’s Quality-Plus Leader Academy in which the district grooms future leaders. He joined GCPS in 2002 as a teacher at Dacula Middle. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Miami University, and a master’s degree and specialist degree from the University of Georgia.
The announcement completes the transition for one of 13 schools that have had new principals named since the school year began. Principal vacancies remain at North Gwinnett High, Brookwood High and the Gwinnett School of Math, Science and Technology.
