Collins Hill can earn a share of the region championship with a win at Mill Creek Friday night. If Norcross and North Gwinnett lose, Collins Hill will claim its first region crown since 2004. A win by all three teams and the No. 1 seed in the playoffs will be decided by a coin flip.
“I think it’s the toughest region in the state,” Collins Hill head coach Kevin Reach said. “With us to have an opportunity for a three-way tie, that hasn’t happened here in a long time.”
Collins Hill got in the region title mix when it upset No. 1-ranked North Gwinnett two weeks ago. First-year quarterback Tyler Herman has emerged as one of the state’s top passers with 2,053 yards and 24 touchdowns this season.
“We knew he could spin it and throw it very well,” Reach said.
Mill Creek was eliminated from playoff contention last week, but the Hawks can still play spoiler and show they deserve to be in the playoffs. A one-point loss to Peachtree Ridge and a three-point loss to North Gwinnett were the difference in Mill Creek making the playoffs.
The last two years this game has been decided by three points. Collins Hill won in 2011 and Mill Creek last year on the final play of the game.
“Last year they blocked a field goal and it was a dogfight until the end,” Reach said. “Our kids remember that last loss and want to avenge what happened last year.”
Last meeting: Mill Creek won 17-14 last year
