As Dacula prepares for a redemption trip to the playoffs, Berkmar readies for a final go-around.
The Falcons, who won just a single game a year ago, are locked into the No. 2 spot and a home game out of Region 8-AAAAAA. It’s quite a rise for first-year head coach Tommy Jones’ Falcons.
So for Dacula this isn’t the last game or even the last time at home. For Berkmar, the home season is over and this is one last game in a season which began with much promise.
The Patriots started off 3-0 before losing their quarterback and skidding to six straight losses. Through all the struggles, the Berkmar defense kept it in games, but couldn’t overcome the learning curve of a freshman quarterback.
“He’s grown and has gotten better each week,” Berkmar head coach Jonathan Sanks said of his quarterback, Jadarrius Warner. “It’s rough but it’s still been a great season.”
Sanks said Wednesday’s final practice was emotional for his senior players who played their whole career under Sanks. Players like Darrious Mitchell, who Sanks watched grow up, typify the type of person Sanks said plays at Berkmar.
“I’ve watched him, he’s grown into a good man and a good player,” Sanks said of his hybrid defensive back. “I try to take a kid, he may be a little round around the edges, I just try to smooth him out.”
Last meeting: Berkmar won 24-21 last year.
