The Georgia Gwinnett College baseball team released its 2014 spring schedule, a challenging 55-game slate as the program looks to compete for its first-ever postseason berth, on Tuesday.
The schedule features 34 home games at the Grizzly Baseball Complex, including 29 in the first two months of the season. Head coach Brad Stromdahl’s squad kicks things off Friday, Jan. 31, beginning a three-game series against Shawnee State (Ohio) in Lawrenceville.
The Grizzlies will play home-and-road series against each of the last two Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series champions, Faulkner (Ala.) and Tennessee Wesleyan. GGC will play 10 total games against teams that received national votes in the final 2013 NAIA coaches’ poll, including four against local foe Southern Polytechnic.
The Grizzlies also will tackle in-state opponents Truett-McConnell, Toccoa Falls, North Georgia (NCAA Division II), Emmanuel and Emory (NCAA Division III).
A pair of trips to Louisiana highlight the Grizzlies’ road contests, as GGC will visit Loyola University New Orleans in late February and LSU Alexandria in early April. The Grizzlies also will travel to games in Tennessee and Alabama.
The 2014 Association of Independent Institutions Baseball Championships will be held May 2-5 at Fisher College in Lynn, Mass. Nine teams have declared to compete for the six-team field with one direct qualifying berth to the NAIA national tournament on the line.
The Grizzlies are eligible this season to compete for postseason championships, appear in national rankings and be counted in NAIA national statistics.
“We have assembled a very competitive 55-game schedule that will challenge our squad,” said Stromdahl. “We’re taking on many teams that have had a lot of national success and if we compete well against these teams, we have a chance to be ranked among them at the end of the year.”
The Grizzlies return 15 players from last year’s inaugural 30-win squad, including the team’s four top batting and pitching leaders. Stromdahl also welcomes talented 21 newcomers into the fold.
