SUWANEE — With a playoff berth within its grasp, Peachtree Ridge entered Friday night’s region contest ready for big things against Meadowcreek.
With a stout defense and a record-setting performance, the Lions made quick work of the Mustangs with a 47-0 win in their final home game of the regular season.
“We needed to take care of business tonight for trying to get into the playoffs,” Peachtree Ridge head coach Mark Fleetwood said. “I was pleased with the way we came out and got on top. … We came and had to make sure we took care of business and made the playoffs. I am proud of all these guys.”
Running back Jordan Ellis was a huge source of Lion pride as he set a school record for touchdowns in a game with five.
Peachtree Ridge (7-2, 5-2 Region 7-AAAAAA) got things going early as a four-play drive culminated in the first touchdown run of the night by Ellis. Following a long touchdown pass from Chance Thrasher to Brandon Johnson, Ellis was at it again as he dodged two Meadowcreek defenders and raced 38 yards up the field to give the Lions a 21-point advantage in the opening quarter. Ellis gained 109 yards on the ground in the opening half.
“Jordan has been a special guy, it has been great watching him… he is a top-notch guy on the field and a top-notch guy off the field,” Fleetwood said.
Not to be outdone, the defense played with a sense of urgency in the opening half, holding Meadowcreek (1-8,1-6, 7-AAAAAA) to seven net rushing yards and 60 yards of total offense.
Ellis added another score in the second quarter and capped his scoring with another one-yard burst in the third quarter to end the night with a record five scores and 133 rushing yards on 15 carries.
“The coaches told me they would give me the opportunity to do it and I did it… all credit goes to my offensive line,” Ellis said of his record-setting performance.
The win guarantees Peachtree Ridge no worse than the fourth seed in the region, however a win over North Gwinnett next Friday can improve the Lions’ seed.
“It’s a big game… we want that No. 3 spot we have to go out, have a good week of practice and compete,” Ellis said.
Thrasher completed all 12 of his passes for 146 yards, 72 of those going to Johnson, who led the Lions. Ryan Moore led Meadowcreek with 74 yards on the ground.
