LAWRENCEVILLE -- Georgia Gwinnett College has been selected to host the 2013 Association of Independent Institutions men's and women's soccer championships, the league's executive committee voted Wednesday.
The four-team tournaments are scheduled for Nov. 15-16 on the Grizzlies' newly-opened synthetic turf soccer field.
GGC automatically receive bids as tournament hosts. The remaining three teams in each field will be based on order of finish during the regular season. The men's and women's champions then receive a berth into the NAIA national tournament.
The event will mark the first postseason appearance in any sport for the second-year Grizzlies.
"We are very excited to be selected as host of the A.I.I. soccer championships this fall," said Dr. Darin S. Wilson, GGC's Director of Athletics. "We look forward to showcasing our beautiful facility and campus to our guests from across the country."
The A.I.I. represents approximately 40 institutions from around the U.S. and Canada. Currently, about 10 men's and women's programs from around the U.S. are slated for A.I.I. soccer action this fall.
Nov. 15 will feature two men's semifinals and two women's semifinals, with championship games played on Nov. 16.
Departing member Jamestown (N.D.) captured the men's title last fall while Ashford (Iowa) claimed the women's crown.
The Grizzlies went 14-2-2 in men's action during their first-ever season last year, while the women's team posted a 10-7-1 mark.
