SNELLVILLE -- A Snellville man threatened to detonate a bomb after police came to his home following an alleged domestic dispute, officials said.

Jeremy Keith Weatherford was arrested Tuesday and charged with simple assault and possession or manufacturing of a destructive device. Gwinnett County jail records show he is being held without bond.

Snellville Police Chief Roy Whitehead said officers went to Weatherford's home on Williams Downs Circle Tuesday morning to serve an arrest warrant stemming from a previous domestic dispute. They found Weatherford in the garage.

"(Officers) observed a suspicious looking device and based on comments Weatherford made, officers removed him and backed away from the location," Whitehead said.

After a search warrant was obtained the Gwinnett County police hazmat team responded to the scene and "removed and neutralized the device," Whitehead said. No specifics about the device were released.

"There was no indication that (Weatherford) planned to hurt anyone other than himself as far as we can determine," Whitehead said.

Possession or manufacturing of a destructive device is a felony in Georgia. A conviction carries potential sentencing between three and 20 years in prison.

Jail records showed Weatherford's Tuesday arrest was his 13th in the county since 2003.
