STONE MOUNTAIN -- No injuries were reported in an early afternoon house fire in Stone Mountain on Saturday.
Gwinnett County firefighters were dispatched to the 2300 block of Broad Creek Drive just before 3 p.m. after a resident saw the back of a neighboring house was on fire with visible flames. The caller didn't know if the family who lived in the house was home at the time.
When crews arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from the basement of the two-story home. Firefighters entered the house, but later had to attack the blaze from the outside due to heavy fire and smoke conditions inside of the residence.
"Firefighters protected the neighboring homes as the fire was being extinguished," fire department spokesman Lt. Colin Rhoden said. "The bulk of the fire was knocked down and crews re-entered the house to complete thorough searches and to put out 'hot spots.'"
The blaze was contained before 4 p.m.
Firefighters found that the family was not at home, but will be displaced. The fire caused heavy structural damage throughout the entire house. Gwinnett County Fire Investigators were called to the scene to determine the cause. For now, the incident is undetermined and under investigation, Rhoden said.
