Shelter accepting pet supplies for Oklahoma

LAWRENCEVILLE -- The Gwinnett County Animal Shelter is collecting pet food and supplies to take to tornado-ravaged Moore, Okla.

At least 24 people were killed Monday in Moore, the Oklahoma City suburb, when a massive tornado rolled through the area. While Red Cross personnel and other emergency responders deal with the hellish aftermath of the storm, the doors of the City of Moore Animal Shelter have been flooded with displaced animals, Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Edwin Ritter said.

"While they are striving to find the owners, they need assistance to feed the animals they have with them," Ritter said. "There are many pet owners that have also lost everything and find themselves in a situation where they cannot feed their pets."

This weekend, the Gwinnett County Animal Shelter will collect food and supplies to take to Moore. Despite the Memorial Day holiday, officials will be at the shelter from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday through Tuesday to accept donations, which will be driven to Oklahoma immediately after the drive has ended.

The Gwinnett County Animal Shelter is located at 884 Winder Highway in Lawrenceville. For more information, call 770-339-3200.
