Mill Creek takes top honors at county track banquet

Staff Photo: John Bohn Mill Creek track athletes Malaysia George and Michael Cheeks were named Girls and Boys Athlete of the Year at the Gwinnett All-County Track and Field Banquet held at Collins Hill HIgh School on Thursday.

Mill Creek's program took the top honors at the Gwinnett County track and field banquet on Thursday at Collins Hill.

The Hawks' Michael Cheeks was named boys athlete of the year and Malayshia George was selected as girls athlete of the year. Cheeks won the 200-meter run state championship and was a member of the state champion 1,600 relay team. George won state titles in the high jump, 400 and was second in the 200.

Boys head coach Rik Moore guided the Hawks to the program's first state championship. Girls head coach Jed Hodges led the team to a runner-up finish, which is the highest in the program's history.

The Gwinnett County track and field hall of fame also inducted five new members. Longtime Greater Atlanta Christian coach Brad Kinser was inducted along with athletes Mandy Kinney (Brookwood), Antonio Lamar (Brookwood), Natalie Knight (Shiloh) and Justin Zach (Brookwood).

The county's all-county team was also announced. The following athletes were selected to the all-county team on criteria set by the coaches.
