LAWRENCEVILLE -- A math teacher from Mountain View High School has resigned following an alleged inappropriate relationship with a student.
Thomas Frederick Grimshaw of Dacula was arrested Wednesday and charged with sexual assault. He was booked into the Gwinnett jail, where he remains without bond.
District Spokesman Jorge Quintana said the incident is "still an open criminal investigation."
Quintana said that Grimshaw resigned Monday during a human resources investigation regarding the alleged relationship.
According to a Gwinnett County Schools Police report, high school principal Keith Chaney "reported (on May 3) that he was investigating a possible sexual assault incident that occurred" April 29 at the school. Quintana said a warrant was issued for Grimshaw's arrest on Tuesday.
"The district did make a report to DFACS and to the Professional Standards Commission regarding these allegations," he said. The Professional Standards Commission sets and applies guidelines for the preparation, certification, and continued licensing of public educators.
Grimshaw had been an employee of Gwinnett County Public Schools since August 2006.
