BUFORD -- Buford's City Commission on Monday approved a request by Blanchard Machinery at 1850 Plunkett Road to allow the expansion of a proposed storage facility on the side of the building and to allow the company to display two new pieces of wood chipping machinery in front of the building.
The company had requested that it be allowed to display four pieces of equipment, but after hearing from three nearby residents about concerns the facility did not conform to the appearance of the neighborhood and could potentially diminish the value of their homes, commissioners reduced the number to two.
Commissioners also tabled a request by Sun Communities Inc. to rezone 1.8175 acres from Mobil Home to Commercial-2 at 1125 Horizon Parkway. The Planning and Zoning Board had recommended denial because the property is surrounded by a residential community and could be considered "spot' zoning. The issue will be discussed at the commission's June 3 meeting.
In other business commissioners held public hearings on the following issues and approved:
-- Adams Classic & Collector Cars request to rezone property located at 4991 B.U. Bowman Drive from M-1 to Commercial 2 with a special-use permit to allow auto storage and sales;
-- A request by Frank Stabilito for a special-use permit for property at 6067 Lanier Islands Parkway to allow sales and service of boats and personal watercraft;
-- Amending the city's 2000 zoning ordinance and subdivision regulations that govern the city's M-1 Light Industry District;
-- Amending the city's 2000 zoning ordinance and subdivision regulations that govern pawn shops, title pawn shops and similar establishments.
Items approved under new business included:
-- Approval of a Force Account Agreement with Gwinnett County for South Bogan road;
-- Adoption of a resolution authorizing the city manager to submit an application to the Environmental Protection Division to receive funds from the Hazardous Trust Fund;
-- Authorization for the chairman and city manager to sign election form for Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia Power year-end settlement;
-- Appointment of Stacy Rolin as voting delegate and Bryan Kerlin as alternate for MEAG Power annual election;
-- Reappointment of Douglas Williams Sr. as Commissioner for the Buford Housing Authority;
-- Authorization for city attorney to proceed with condemnation of properties along Buford Highway for the Davis Road sewer project;
-- Approval of the final payment for the Buford Elementary School demolition;
-- Approval of the final payment for City of Buford GATEway landscape project;
-- Approval of payments for Phase II, SR 347 Natural Gas Facilities Relocation;
-- Authorization for city manager to enter into consent agreement with the Georgia Public Service Commission;
-- Approval of the release of pledged funds to People's Bank & Trust
All votes were unanimous.
