JEFFERSON -- Two-time defending state champion Josh Brickell from Peachtree Ridge was runner-up in the final race of his impressive high school career.
Brickell, a six-time champion in two sports, was second in the 3,200-meter run in the Class AAAAAA boys track and field state championship on Friday in Jefferson.
Walton's Kenan Farmer won the state title with a time of 9 minutes, 11.38 seconds.
Brickell posted a time of 9:15.88 to finish second and teammate Kevin Mills was third with a time of 9:22.92.
Gwinnett put four runners in the top eight with Collins Hill's Jonathan Moses finishing third (9:27.60) and Norcross' Alex Del Guercio taking sixth (9:29.72).
Brickell was a three-time cross country state champion and won three state crowns in track in the 3,200 and 1,600.
Greater Atlanta Christian's Miller Kettle was fifth in the Class AA race with a time of 10:17.33.
Wesleyan sweeps Coosa
ROME -- Wesleyan swept Coosa in Class AA state baseball action Friday night.
The Wolves blanked the hosts 7-0 in Game 1 and again, 3-0 in the nightcap. In the opener, the teams were scoreless until the sixth inning when the Wolves' Christian Stark cleared the bases with a double. That was more than enough for starter Johnny Richards, who went the distance and struck out eight. Jahmai Jones, Brandon Moss and Sam Carver each had two hits.
In the clincher, Christopher Peden struck out 10 and Jones led off the game with a home run to give Wesleyan all the scoring it would need to advance to next week's second round.
Providence splits in Savannah
SAVANNAH -- Providence Christian won the first game, 3-2, but fumbled away the second game 9-0 in the first round of the Class A baseball playoffs Friday.
In Game 1, Luke Henderson pitched six innings to get the win and Jackson Winskie worked a perfect seventh to get the save. Max Broom had three hits to lead the Storm. In Game 2, Providence gave up only three hits but committed seven errors in the loss. Erich Stahl pitched six innings, giving up two hits and one earned run. Weather permitting, the teams will try and play Game 3 today at 1.
GAC splits at Pepperell
LINDALE -- Greater Atlanta Christian split its opening round Class AA baseball series with Pepperell on Friday.
The Spartans won Game 1, 6-1, but fell in Game 2, 4-3. Justin Lewis picked up the win on the mound in the opener for GAC. Lewis gave up only three hits in shutting out the hosts. Jackson O'Brien, Peyton McGuire and Jack McLaughlin each had two hits to power the offense.
Pepperell prevailed in Game 2, in part, due to three unearned runs off losing pitcher Patrick Stone. Ross Wood and Connor Joseph had two hits for GAC. Game 3 is scheduled for today at 3 p.m..
Lanier swept out of playoffs
COLUMBUS -- Columbus ended Lanier's season in the first round of the Class AAAA baseball playoffs, defeating the Longhorns 8-0 and 10-5 Friday.
In Game 1, Lanier could only muster two hits in dropping the opener. The nightcap was a close contest with the hosts leading 4-2 heading into the sixth. However, the floodgates opened and Columbus scored six runs to put the game out of reach. T.J. Richardson had three hits, including a home run, for Lanier. Matt Ramsay also had three hits for the Longhorns, who finish their season at 18-10.
Greater Atlanta Christian 9, Armuchee 0
NORCROSS -- Greater Atlanta Christian defeated Armuchee 9-0 in Class AA state soccer Friday.
Max Gomas, Brendan Dickerson and Davis Bryan each had two goals for GAC. The Spartans (14-1-2) advance to play Union County next week.
Fellowship Christian 6, Providence Christian 2
ROSWELL -- Providence Christian fell to Fellowship Christian 6-1 in the first round of the Class A state playoffs Friday.
The Storm fell behind 4-0 in the first half and goals by Connor Jones and Taylor Marshall were not enough as Providence finishes its season at 8-9-1.
Wesleyan 2, Calhoun 0
CALHOUN -- Wesleyan defeated Calhoun 2-0 in the first round of the Class AA playoffs Friday.
The Wolves (4-12-1) were led by Christina Moraitis and Hope Morgan, who scored goals. Calhoun came into the game ranked sixth in the state and had only lost one game before falling to Wesleyan to end its season. The Wolves will travel to Jefferson next week in the second round.
Collins Hill 18, Norcross 1
NORCROSS -- Collins Hill tuned up for its playoff game against Milton next week by defeating Norcross 18-1 on Friday.
Russell Gardner, Connor Pittman and Juan Espinoza each scored three goals for the Eagles (11-6). Aubrey Johnson controlled eight ground balls for Collins Hill.
North Gwinnett 8, Brookwood 4
SUWANEE -- North Gwinnett defeated Brookwood 8-4 in the Area 4-AAAAAA play-in game Friday.
North advances to next week's state tournament. Lyndsey Cobb led the Bulldogs (10-8, 5-1) with three goals. K.J. Hardaway scored twice and Lynden Huffman, Emily Nance and Lauren Aycock had a goal apiece.
Grayson 11, St. Pius 8
LOGANVILLE -- Grayson defeated St. Pius 11-8 Friday night.
Lyndsay Parris led the Rams (11-6) with four goals. Charlotte Partrick and Ashley Mistretta each scored twice for Grayson.
