'Knight in the Garden' is Friday

LILBURN -- Knight Elementary School is celebrating the opening of its new Outdoor Learning Project by inviting the community to attend a special ceremony Friday.

With the help of the Environmental Protection Agency, Home Depot and community members, the school was able to open the unique outdoor environment, designed to bring students, their families and the local community together.

The outdoor area will feature raised vegetable and pollinator gardens on school grounds.

Parents and community members are invited to attend the event, which is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Knight Elementary, 401 River Road, Lilburn.

The educational garden is broken down into several learning areas with different themes including a Rainbow Garden, Dragon Garden, Music Garden, Heritage Gardens, Storybook Gardens, Herb Garden, Math Gardens and Sensory Garden.

Staff with the school hope the garden will "reconnect students with nature, thereby improving upon the health and wellbeing of the children, their environment and the school's community."

Principal Toni Ferguson said that "environmental awareness learned in early childhood promotes optimal childhood health, intellectual development and environmental stewardship."

"A Knight in the Garden" will feature self-guided tours of the new gardens, nature-themed craft and planting stations, live music from local musicians, students and former Knight Elementary students and dinner, which is $5.
