Gladiators' Guimond named to ECHL All-Rookie team

DULUTH -- Gwinnett Gladiators defenseman Sacha Guimond received an early birthday present by being one of six players announced to the ECHL's All-Rookie team Wednesday.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound native of Ville-Marie, Quebec, who turns 22 today, currently leads all league blueliners with 47 points on 12 goals (fourth among defensemen) and 35 assists (tied for first).

He also has nine goals and 29 total points on power plays, both of which also lead ECHL defensemen, while his 20 power-play assists is tied for the league defensemen lead.

Guimond has posted 22 points in 24 games since the Gladiators acquired him in a trade with the San Francisco Bulls on Jan. 14, and joined South Carolina's Ryan Zapolski, Ontario's Cameron Burt and Mario Lamoureux, Cincinnati's David Pacan and Reading's David Vallorami on the All-Rookie team.

Wednesday's announcement marks the first time the Gladiators have had a player make the All-Rookie team since defensemen Drew Paris and Sam Roberts earned the honor in the 2009-10 season, and the eighth time in their 10 seasons in Gwinnett.

In other Gladiators news, the team welcomed it's leading scorer back to the roster Wednesday after Casey Pierro-Zabotel was reassigned by the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League.

the 24-year-old native of Ashton, B.C., has posted a club-best 74 points (third in the ECHL) on 21 goals and 53 assists in 65 games this season, along with a goal and an assist in five games with the Checkers.
