Loganville mayor resigns due to health concerns

LOGANVILLE — Ailing Mayor Ray Nunley will not finish his term at the helm of Loganville, officials said.

The City Council is scheduled to meet today to discuss Nunley’s resignation, as he undergoes radiation treatments for lung cancer.

City Manager Bill Jones said a special election will likely be held in June for a temporary leader and Nunley had already announced he would not seek a third term during November’s regular election. Vice Mayor Dan Curry will step into the mayor’s role until the results this summer, Jones added.

Earlier this month, the city staff surprised the mayor with plans for a Relay for Ray initiative, bringing together officials to participate in an April 26 Relay for Life event in honor of Nunley.
