SNELLVILLE -- Up 13-0 early, Grayson's baseball team had to hang on Monday night.
The Rams nearly saw their lead slip away in the Region 8-AAAAAA matchup at Shiloh, but held on for a 13-10 victory in their last tune-up before this week's National High School Invitational at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. Instead of heading into that trip with a blowout win, they got a tough fight from the Generals.
Grayson scored eight runs in the first inning and five more in the third for its 13-run lead, which looked plenty for sharp starting pitcher Korey Anderson. Anderson pitched a scoreless three innings with four strikeouts, but was removed to get some rest thanks to the large lead.
But Shiloh fought back with four runs in the fourth inning and six more in the sixth, closing to within three runs before Grayson's Jon Briley stopped the onslaught with a save. He pitched the final 1 innings.
The Rams (7-5, 4-2) got huge offensive nights from Austin Meadows and Taylor Allum, who each drove in four runs. Meadows had a home run and a double and Allum had a homer and a single.
Jeril Dawson scored three Grayson runs and Jack Banda had a team-high three hits. Chris Erwin and Brandon Benson each added a hit and scored two runs.
Archer 9, Berkmar 2
LAWRENCEVILLE -- Archer evened its Region 8-AAAAAA record at 2-2 Monday night with a 9-2 victory over visiting Berkmar.
Sean Fitzpatrick earned the victory, pitching three innings, striking out four and allowing just one hit. He also went 2-for-4 hitting with a pair of RBIs.
Curtis Perry led the Tigers' offense with a 4-for-4 day with two RBIs. Archer (5-8) also got a 2-for-4 game from Hayden Pendergraft,
South Gwinnett 16, Central Gwinnett 1
SNELLVILLE -- Adrian Martinez earned his first pitching victory of the season Monday night in South Gwinnett's 16-1, four-inning victory over Central Gwinnett.
Martinez (1-0) allowed three hits and struck out four batters in his four innings. He also was 2-for-3 with an RBI offensively.
Ryan Patterson led South (10-3 overall, 3-0 Region 8-AAAAAA) by going 3-for-3 with four RBIs. Teammate Montrell Marshall was 3-for-4 with two RBIs while Drew McCarthy went 2-for-2 with four RBIs.
North Gwinnett 17, GAC 5
SUWANEE -- North Gwinnett improved to 8-1 with a 17-5 victory over visiting Greater Atlanta Christian on Monday night.
Nathan Howell and Luke Printz led the Bulldogs with four goals each, while James Shimkus (three goals, one assist) and Spencer Howey (three goals, two assists) also had big nights. Dan Constant contributed two North goals and Brady Mann also scored a goal.
Evan Richardson (seven saves) and Zach Retsky (three saves) shared time at goalie for North.
Whit Anderson scored three goals to lead GAC.
Parkview 21, Rockdale 7
LILBURN -- Riley Fields poured in eight goals to lead Parkview to a 21-7 victory over Rockdale on Monday.
Kelly Spevacek and Naomi Killian each scored five goals for the Panthers.
Norcross 4, Collins Hill 1
LAWRENCEVILLE -- Norcross swept the singles matches and beat Collins Hill 4-1 in a Region 7-AAAAAA match Monday.
The Blue Devils (9-3, 4-1) got singles wins from No. 1 Chris Willia, No. 2 William Teoh and No. 3 Nick Lynch. Also earning a point was the No. 2 doubles pair of Jeff McKendree and Joe Miller.
Collins Hill (9-4, 2-3) got its' point from Jake Inderrieden and Marcus Maloney at No. 1 doubles.
Peachtree Ridge 3, Lambert 2
DULUTH -- Peachtree Ridge edged out Lambert 3-2 on Monday, improving to 9-3 overall.
No. 1 Alex Makarenko and No. 2 Jashith Choppara won their singles matches, while Taylor Foote and Alex Peed secured the third point at No. 1 doubles.
Norcross 4, Collins Hill 1
LAWRENCEVILLE -- Norcross' girls tennis team improved to 10-1 on the season with a 4-1 victory over Collins Hill on Monday.
The Blue Devils swept the singles points with Stacey Lackey (No. 1), Amber Lackey (No. 2) and Rachel Luttrell (No. 3) all winning. Their other point came from the No. 1 doubles team of Maria Lackey and Ashley Schreder.Collins Hill's Lindsay Doktor and Rocqsanna Malek won at No. 2 doubles.
Peachtree Ridge 4, Lambert 1
DULUTH -- Peachtree Ridge continued to roll with a sweep of the singles matches in a 4-1 win over Lambert on Monday.
No. 1 Abby Owens, No. 2 Jena Kelly and No. 3 Ali Mills all won for the Lions (11-1, 6-0). No. 2 doubles pair Olivia Silva and Riley Guise also picked up a point.
Social Circle 191, Hebron 213
SOCIAL CIRCLE -- Hebron Christian's boys golf team lost 191-213 to host Social Circle on Monday afternoon at The Creek at Hard Labor. The Lions fell to 4-3 on the season.
