PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE: Creative Enterprises assists disabled with finding work

Creative Enterprises Inc. is a not-for-profit training and employment program for adult individuals with a variety of disabilities. Located at 701 Hi Hope Lane, just off Hi Hope Road in Lawrenceville, we provide job readiness and job training for those who are able to work independently or who have the skills to learn to work. We contract with local businesses to provide work for the persons we serve. We also provide Community Access Group services that include classes to meet individual goals and interests, as well as outings to a variety of places in our area. This is done in a day-format, with hours for the persons we serve being Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. More than 130 individuals are currently receiving services in this program weekly.

The majority of those who are in our program access a Medicaid NOW or COMP waiver to cover the cost of this training as well as transportation to and from the facility. Others not accessing this federal funding participate in our classes and programs as private-pay customers. For those interested in applying for Medicaid waivers, the application should be pursued as early as possible; young people should begin this process in middle school within the public school system; guidance counselors there can provide information on applying. Check our website at: www.ceisite.com for additional information.

We are happy to serve those who want a diverse daily experience in learning, community outings, and participation in several rich environments available to the persons we serve on-site, such as:

• A retail greenhouse and organic garden.

• An animal rescue program where cats and kittens are housed and adopted out to the public.

• A thrift store, open to the public and offering great prices on gently used merchandise. We gratefully take donations.

On April 20, some of the individuals we serve with particular artistic talents will be displaying their finished works at an Art Show that will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Discount Picture Framing, located at 945 Buford Drive in Lawrenceville, approx. a half mile north of Ga. Highway 316. There will be paintings, collages, clay-work and assemblages for sale to the public. Please consider stopping by.

Springtime is a busy time at Creative Enterprises Inc. Our greenhouse annually offers its Spring Plant Sale, an extensive list of bedding plants, perennials, shrubs, trees and veggie plants for sale, as well as rain barrels. Prices are very competitive compared to other retailers, so come out and purchase your plants with us and save. We have a coupon that will discount plants by 10 percent. Hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and for the month of April, Saturdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. as well. We grow an organic garden each year, selling our produce to the public on-site. Buying local is always best.

We invite anyone interested in volunteering with our organization to come by, visit our facilities and learn more about the work being done here. There are many ways for individuals to contribute. You can be a mentor, a teacher on a special subject, a volunteer in many capacities — contact us with your offering. Donations are gratefully accepted and non-taxable. Creative Enterprises is a vibrant organization that embraces all interested people who can help us do our best for those who we serve here. Come be a part of it!
