McCann to hit in minor league game

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Brian McCann is scheduled to take a step in his return from right shoulder surgery Tuesday, serving as the designed hitter in a Braves minor league game.

To protect his shoulder, McCann will be replaced by a courtesy runner on the bases.

The Duluth graduate had his labrum repaired and a cyst removed last October and won’t be cleared for full game action until at least April 16 — six months after the surgery.

With a minor league rehab to follow, McCann likely won’t rejoin the Braves until late in April.

McCann was put on the 15-day disabled list with pitcher Brandon Beachy and shortstop Paul Janish on Monday, retroactive to Aug. 22. Beachy is out until at least June after Tommy John elbow surgery. Janish, who had surgery on his left shoulder, will be able to go out on a minor league rehab after April 8.
