NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Doug Jones scored his 22nd goal of the season, but that's all the Gwinnett Gladiators could muster Friday night in a 5-1 loss to South Carolina at North Charleston Coliseum.
The loss snapped Gwinnett's five-game winning streak, but the Gladiators (41-26-2-1) remain in first in the ECHL's South Division.
Former Gwinnett goaltender Ryan Zapolski turned aside 37 of 38 shots for South Carolina (36-25-5-3), while Mike Lee took the loss in his first start with the Gladiators since Feb. 9.
South Carolina jumped out to a 2-0 lead through one period despite being outshot 16-7.
The Rays kept rolling into the second. Damon Kipp scored off a Gwinnett turnover just 29 seconds in, and Chris Langkow pushed the South Carolina lead to 4-0 only 58 seconds later. Peter Boyd then made it 5-0 at 5:19 with his 20th goal of the season.
Jones capped the scoring in the second with a terrific effort, stealing the puck shorthanded and beating Zapolski on a breakaway at 11:48.
Both of these teams will clash again tonight at 7:05 p.m. at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
