Wintry mix, rain forecast for Friday, Saturday

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Despite it being the early days of spring, a weekend weather forecast predicts another blast of winter in the Gwinnett area.

The National Weather Service forecasts lows in the mid-30s overnight Thursday into Friday morning with northwest winds up to 10 mph. The weather could get interesting on Friday with a rain and snow mix in the morning, and rain in the afternoon with high temperatures in the mid-50s. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent.

Gwinnett was listed among several central and north Georgia counties that the NWS included in a "red flag warning" on Thursday afternoon.

"A quick moving storm system will move across the Tennessee Valley tonight and Friday morning, bringing a chance of sleet and rain to parts of west Georgia and central Georgia," the NWS stated in a hazardous weather outlook. "No accumulations are expected except possibly in the western sections where light accumulations could occur."

The NWS forecast for Friday night calls for showers in the evening and after midnight. The chance of rain is 90 percent. On Saturday, high temperatures are expected to be in the upper 50s, with a 60 percent chance of rain.
