Malcolm Armstead scored 22 points and Cleanthony Early added 21 as the Shockers routed the Panthers in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Salt Lake City.
Carl Hall added 11 points for ninth-seeded Wichita State (27-8), which will face No. 1 Gonzaga in Saturday's third round.
Steven Adams had 13 points and 11 rebounds for eighth-seeded Pittsburgh (24-9), which shot 35.2 percent from the field and went 1-for-17 from 3-point range in the West Regional contest.
The Panthers were within eight with less than eight minutes to play before Wichita State put the game away with a 13-4 run to boost its lead to 60-43 on two free throws by Armstead with 4:05 to play.
Both teams endured sluggish shooting in the first half - a combined 15-of-51 from the field - with Wichita State scoring the final seven points for a 26-21 lead at the break. The Shockers scored the first four of the second half and stretched the lead to 41-31 on a three-point play by Hall with 11:57 to play.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The NCAA victory is the first for the Shockers since they advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2006. ... Pittsburgh's Lamar Patterson was called for a flagrant 1 foul in the first half while driving to the basket when his elbow inadvertently clubbed Wichita State's Ron Baker in the face. ... The teams were a combined 3-of-37 from 3-point range - the Shockers were 2-for-20 and shot 38.8 percent from the field.
