Love for Levon Blu-ray (NR)
Movie: 4 stars
Disc: 3 and 1/2 stars
Being that the late Levon Helm was one of the most beloved and revered musicians and singers from the classic rock era, it wasn't terribly hard for organizer Don Was to wrangle dozens of his admirers and former collaborators for a one-off tribute/benefit show last October. The who's who list of performers included Gregg Allman, Roger Waters, John Mayer, Joe Walsh, Dierks Bentley, John Prine, Lucinda Williams, Helm's daughter Amy and his old pal from "The Band" Garth Hudson. The mix of the familiar and obscure material strikes a perfect balance and no one ever gives it less than their all.
