PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Julio Teheran showed Sunday that he is now better able to cope with a little early adversity.
The right-hander gave up a leadoff homer to Jordany Valdespin, but blanked the New York Mets through the rest of his seven innings in a 2-1 Braves victory at Tradition Field.
Teheran allowed just two hits after the home run and struck out seven while walking two. The outing dropped the 23-year-old Colombian’s ERA to 1.35 and was evidence again that he is ready to be part of the Braves rotation.
Luis Avilan, Dusty Hughes and Anthony Varvaro each pitched a hitless inning in relief of Teheran, with Varvaro getting the save.
Chris Johnson had a fourth-inning homer for the Braves and Freddie Freeman drove in the tie-breaking run with a single in the sixth inning.
Johnson also had two singles and raised his spring average to .333 with a 3-for-4 game.
The Braves (13-11) host the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday, with Kris Medlen scheduled to start the 1:05 p.m. game to be carried by ESPN.
