DULUTH -- A Gwinnett County teacher has been selected as the Georgia Science Teachers Association teacher of the year.

Jennifer Burley, a teacher at Duluth Middle School, was selected as the 2013 middle school science teacher of the year by the organization, which aims to improve science teaching and leadership for science education.

Each year, GSTA recognizes excellence in science teaching through its awards and recognition program. The organization selects teacher of the year for each level.

Since 2004, Burley has taught seventh-grade science to Duluth Middle students where she was selected as the school's teacher of the year for 2009-10.

She began her education career in DeKalb County in 2001. She holds a bachelor's degree in geology and environmental sciences and policy from Clemson University, a master's degree in science education Georgia State University and a specialist's degree in curriculum and instruction from Piedmont College.

Student musician places first at festival

SUWANEE -- North Gwinnett High School band student Victoria Bethel competed in the Carolina Trumpet Festival the University of North Carolina -- Greensboro.

She placed first among the 15 finalists in the contest, earning her a new Shires custom-made C trumpet.
