Teheran strong again, but Braves lose to Tigers

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Julio Teheran continued his strong spring Thursday night for the Braves, allowing one run and striking out five over four innings against the visiting Detroit Tigers.

But except for a home run by Juan Francisco, there wasn't much other good news as the Braves fell to 6-7 in the Grapefruit League.

Anthony Varvaro gave up seven hits and five runs in the seventh inning and the Tigers (7-6) won 9-2 while pounding out 18 hits.

Teheran, poised to become the Braves' fifth starter, allowed three hits and a walk. The Tigers' run off him came in the fourth inning on a single by Prince Fielder after a balk moved Brennan Bosch into scoring position.

Teheran, who has a 2.00 spring ERA, has struck out 12 over nine innings in his three starts while allowing just four hits and two walks.

Tigers starter Drew Smyly threw four scoreless innings, limiting the Braves to two hits. The left-hander struck out four and walked one.

The Braves have split-squad games at 1:05 p.m. today. Kris Medlen will start against the Toronto Blue Jays at Champion Stadium, while Sean Gilmartin gets the start in Kissimmee against the Houston Astros.
