Just days into training camp with the Silverbacks, midfielder Richie Menjivar has been called up to play for El Salvador in a friendly matchup against Ecuador, the Silverbacks announced Thursday.
"We're extremely proud that Richie was called up to play in a game of this magnitude -- it speaks volumes about his abilities," Silverbacks General Manager Andy Smith said in a release. "Any time one of our players can go out and get international experience, it's going to make our team better as a whole."
Menjivar, who was born in the U.S., will depart March 19 to join the El Salvador squad, hoping to earn his sixth cap for the country in the March 21 game.
Menjivar may get his first preseason experience with Atlanta on Saturday against Georgia State University at Silverbacks Park. Mostly trialists were expected to play in Thursday's first exhibition against North Georgia College.
The regular season will kick off for Atlanta on April 13 against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers.
