John F. Doran, age 88, of Dacula, Georgia, formerly Saginaw, Michigan, passed away March 2, 2013. A second generation Irish-American, he was born on June 27, 1924, in Detroit, Michigan. After high school, he joined the United States Marine Corps in 1943. Sent to the Pacific Theater of Operations, he saw action on Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian, Guam, and Pelelieu. He was honorably discharged from the military in 1946 and worked in the Chrysler Detroit Arsenal Tank Plant in Warren, Michigan. His GI benefits enabled him to enroll at Michigan State University, East Lansing, in 1949, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1952. Thereafter, he worked in construction supply sales most of his career, retiring from Huron Portland Cement Company in 1986. He had an extraordinary sense of humor, was a wonderful, loving husband and father, and an avid sportsman. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances T. Doran, and second wife, Barbara M. Doran. He is survived by sons, Thomas E. Doran (Linda) of Woodstock, Georgia, John F. Doran Jr. (Wanda) of Dacula, Georgia, and Michael D. Doran of Saginaw, Michigan, together with stepdaughters, Kim Offenburger, of Gilbertsville, Kentucky, and Kris Hitzel, of Andover, New Jersey; he is also survived by six grandchildren, including Thomas S. Doran, April Doran Rhodes, John Doran III, James Doran, Jeffrey Hitzel, and Jerod Hitzel, and 4 great-grandchildren. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Petoskey, Michigan, by arrangement with Flanigan Funeral Home, Buford, Georgia. No services are planned.
