26 displaced by Norcross apartment fire

NORCROSS -- More than two dozen people were displaced Wednesday when their Norcross apartment building was destroyed by fire.

Gwinnett County firefighters were called to the apartment complex at 1311 Seasons Parkway at about 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, finding several units "heavily involved with fire and about to collapse," spokesman Lt. Colin Rhoden said. The caller told emergency personnel that they were knocking on doors to try and evacuate units.

Five engines and two ladder trucks were used to combat the fire, which ultimately damaged eight apartments, "temporarily relocating" a total of 19 adults and seven children, Rhoden said. All residents were accounted for and no injuries were reported.

A family dog lost in the confusion was also located by firefighters and returned to its owners.

"Firefighters entered the burned apartments to do thorough searches and to extinguish any hot spots," Rhoden said. "The apartment complex management worked hard to contact all residents and account for all of them."

The blaze was brought under control in about 45 minutes.

"There is heavy fire damage that was contained to the upper apartments to the left side of the apartment building where the roof collapsed into the apartments," Rhoden said. "The units below sustained heavy water damage."

The exact cause of the fire remained undetermined and under investigation Wednesday.
