Traffic shifts expected for diverging-diamond project

DULUTH -- Drivers could have to deal with some lane closures and traffic shifts this month, as work continues on Gwinnett's first diverging diamond project.

County officials announced Friday that lane closures and traffic shifts could occur intermittently between March 1 and March 22 on Interstate 85. Work along Pleasant Hill Road, between Breckinridge Boulevard/Shackleford Road and Venture Parkway could interfere with traffic at times between now and September.

Officials had taken precautions to avoid morning and evening rush hours, allowing lane closures on I-85 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, 8 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday and 8 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday. Pleasant Hill Road lane closures could take place between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. and between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The work will convert the existing Pleasant Hill Bridge over the interstate into a diverging-diamond interchange, where traffic shifts to the opposite side of the road, allowing free-flowing left turns onto the interstate.
