Organizers seek Suwanee Day participants

SUWANEE -- Organizers from one of the largest annual events in Gwinnett are looking for parade participants for a milestone festival this fall.

The 30th Suwanee Day festival is scheduled for Sept. 21 and has a theme of "30 years of celebrating Suwanee, remembering the past, celebrating the present, looking to the future."

Organizers have encouraged participants to decorate floats and design performances to match the theme. Entrants are eligible for cash prizes by category, including most creative and best reflection of the theme.

The festival typically draws about 50,000 people and has more than 200 vendors.

The festival began in 1984 as a way for city residents to show off the growing town to new neighbors. In 1995, the festival moved from Buford Highway to Old Town, but has been at Town Center since 2004.

Last year's Suwanee Day festival won five awards at the Southeast Festival and Events Association annual conference. This year's Suwanee Day festival has been recognized by the Southeast Tourism Society as a top 20 event for the fall.

The deadline to register at www.suwaneeday.com is Sept. 11.

The parade typically begins at 9 a.m.

City events coordinator Amy Doherty said a committee and city staff plan for the next year's event almost immediately after the current year's festival is over.

"It's like a one-day county fair," Doherty said last year.
