DULUTH -- July 29 is a day that University of Georgia sports fans will want to put on their calendar.
The school's new president and several coaches will visit Gwinnett for "UGA Day," which offers alumni and fans a chance to hear the latest news about the university, and enjoy a buffet dinner. The event is organized by the UGA Alumni Association and the UGA Athletic Association and metro Atlanta Alumni Chapter members are scheduled to volunteer at it. The event is open to all fans. It previously was held at the Cobb Galleria, and will begin at 6 p.m. at the Gwinnett Center at 6400 Sugarloaf Parkway.
"The UGA Day events are terrific opportunities for me to highlight academic successes at UGA in front of a very enthusiastic audience," said new UGA President Jere W. Morehead. "I enjoy spending time with people who love the University of Georgia as much as I do, and am looking forward to UGA Day in Gwinnett."
Each ticket includes one buffet dinner, which will be southern-style tangy pork BBQ with buns, BBQ chicken, macaroni and cheese, Dixie-chopped coleslaw, pickle chips, hot apple cobbler, assorted homemade cookies, tea and lemonade. A cash bar will also be available.
Coach Mark Richt said there are about 80,000 UGA alumni in the metro Atlanta area, and this final stop on the annual tour should bring a large crowd.
"(It's) a great way to kick off the 2013 football season, which will only be a month away," Richt said.
Along with Morehead and Richt, other speakers scheduled to be at the event are men's basketball coach Mark Fox and baseball coach Scott Stricklin. Other coaches scheduled to attend are gymnastics coach Danna Durante, women's tennis coach Jeff Wallace, men's tennis coach Manny Diaz and swimming coach Jack Bauerle. Former Atlanta television personality and current radio sideline reporter Chuck Dowdle will host the event.
Former UGA football players and Gwinnettians David Greene and Matt Stinchcomb are also scheduled to attend.
To attend the event, online registration by July 24 is $30, on-site registration is $40, a reserved table of 10 is $500
