Fire breaks out at pizza restaurant

LAWRENCEVILLE — Firefighters responded to a pizza restaurant early Wednesday morning after a passerby reported seeing smoke coming from the shopping center.

Crews found light smoke showing from the exterior of Buna Pizza Cafe in a strip mall off Five Forks Trickum Road in Lawrenceville just after midnight.

According to Cpt. Tommy Rutledge with the Gwinnett County Fire Department, crews forced entry inside and encountered flames burning in the kitchen area near the back door.

"The fire was contained to the pizza cafe with no extension into adjoining suites," Rutledge said.

The blaze, however, did cause heavy damage to the kitchen and sent smoke throughout the restaurant, he said.

All businesses within the shopping center, including the pizza cafe, were closed. No injuries were reported.

Rutledge said the cause of the fire is currently undetermined and under investigation.
