The first Norcross football player of what's expected to be a large signing class made his college decision on Saturday.

Tight end Chris Herndon committed to the University of Miami, while on a visit to the ACC school.

"I just liked the campus and how comfortable I felt with the coaches. I liked it," Herndon said.

Herndon chose Miami over offers from Mississippi State and UNC-Charlotte.

"Even though I'll be nine hours away from home, The U is a big family, so it will be my new home," Herndon said. "You have to make decisions that take you out of your comfort zone."

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Herndon played at Meadowcreek as a sophomore and transferred to Norcross last year, helping the Blue Devils win the Class AAAAAA state championship.

Herndon, who maintains a 2.9 GPA and is considering engineering as a major, is being recruited as a tight end and H-back.

"After visiting, I knew that's where I wanted to go," Herndon said. "It was perfect for me and that's where I want to go."

Norcross is expecting to have at least 12 players sign college scholarship in February. South Gwinnett set the county record with 13 players signing this year.

Norcross' Lorenzo Carter, Kevin Mouhon and Myles Autry are three of the nation's top recruited players. Jordan Noil, Clinton Lynch, Messiah Francis, Ryan Northrup, Ridwan Issahaku, Jaquan Frazier, Emmanuel Aka and A.J. Bush all have offers from either Division I-BCS schools or Division I-FCS.
