BUFORD -- If you think a skateboard is just a piece of wood on four wheels, you've got a lot to learn -- and the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center is here to help.
On Saturday, the Buford museum opens its new exhibit "Skate and Create," which explores skate culture and shows visitors how skateboarding is becoming more environmentally aware.
"This unique exhibit provides guests with a greater appreciation for skateboarding," said Jason West, director of programming and development. "Not only does it highlight the unusual art found on many boards, but the exhibit clearly shows how the industry is looking for ways to be more environmentally friendly."
Attendees have a chance to see how skateboards are created, view some original skateboard art by companies and individuals, design their own boards and learn about products that are being salvaged from skateboard waste materials.
Some of the products include sunglasses and guitars, which are being made from skateboard scrap materials. Guests also have an opportunity to make something useful out of scrap material at the exhibit.
"We will present our visitors with a 'Deck Speck' challenge to take home some scrap material and make something useful out of it themselves," West said. "We will display the different ideas on the GEHC's Facebook page and website."
During the opening event, there are skateboard demonstrations by Black Diamond, painting and printmaking demos, and deck giveaways.
"Skate and Create" runs through Aug. 25.
