Officer witnesses man rolling safe across parking lot

DACULA -- As an off-duty Barrow County Sheriff's officer drove past a Monkey Joe's early Wednesday morning, he didn't notice any bouncing, sliding, or jumping. Just a man rolling a safe across the parking lot in an office chair.

The alleged incident happened at about 4 a.m. Wednesday, Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Jake Smith said. The white male suspect had a small safe, but after the Barrow officer called Gwinnett police, the man wearing a mask escaped into nearby woods and away from officers and a K-9 unit.

Smith said he wasn't sure of any damage to the Monkey Joe's, or a nearby Little Caesar's restaurant, which was the suspect's first target, but its safe was too large to move.

Smith said investigators didn't immediately know if the suspect left in a vehicle, but, "we think he probably lives close by."

Now wait a minute......A cop sees a crime, CALLS IT IN?????? And then they loose suspect? Are you sure we're not in Mayberry? And they want to hire more cops? Why not get rid of lousy ones first?

Off duty from another county... possibly unarmed, without cuffs, and without a vest. What obligation does he have to jump into action and risk injury or death to himself? Was someone's life in jeopardy? Based on the facts presented here, the answer is no. With all that being written, what exactly makes him lousy? He doesn't work for you, friend.

rextim, you are correct in your assessment of the situation and the way in which it was handled.

Someone obviously didn't read the entire story or cannot comprehend what it says.

citized - If you read the article, it was an off-duty officer from Barrow County that observed the suspect. The police are always looking for good people. Tell you what, why dont you apply for the job?? I'm sure you can catch all of the crooks and solve all of the crimes.

It seems to me that all too often, some commentors on stories involving the police tend to be quick to judge and criticize the police and their actions. Sure, some cops are arrogant and at times hard to deal with. Put yourselves in their shoes and think about it....would you do what they do with starting pay in the mid-30s? I will ALWAYS side with the police until all facts are known.
