ATLANTA -- The conceptual design and plans for a schematic design phase for the new Atlanta Falcons stadium were announced on Tuesday by the organization.

The Georgia World Congress Center Board of Governors approved the plans, which is intended to begin to define the stadium configuration, scale and project components, a Falcons press release said. Construction of the new stadium is expected to begin in the first half of next year.

"Our discussions and decisions have focused on creating an iconic asset for the city and state, a great game day experience for our fans and attendees of other events that will be held in the new stadium, and a connection with the surrounding communities," Falcons President and CEO Rich McKay said. "We look forward to moving into the more detailed design phase with our great partners at 360 Architecture and their recently-selected joint venture partners."

Last week, the Falcons said three Atlanta architecture firms would partner with lead architect 360 Architecture on the project. The three firms were Goode Van Slyke Architecture, Stanley Beaman & Sears, and tvsdesign.

The Falcons also announced on Tuesday its team of general contractors. Atlanta-based Holder Construction Company will lead a joint venture with Hunt Construction Group, H.J. Russell & Company and C.D. Moody Construction Company.

The construction companies have worked together on several projects, the release said, including Hunt and Moody's work on the International Terminal at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Hunt Construction Group has constructed 90 stadiums and arenas, including 12 NFL stadiums and six of the nine retractable roof stadiums in the U.S.

$1 billion for a team that can't win a SB. What a joke.
