ROCHESTER, N.Y. — On the strength of a four-run, three-homer bottom of the fifth inning, the Rochester Red Wings defeated the Gwinnett Braves 6-3 in the finale of the four-game series at Frontier Field on Sunday.
With the win, the Red Wings swept the four-game series from Gwinnett and won the season series, 7-1.
After a rain delay of 56 minutes prior to the first pitch, Rochester (34-36) broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third as Doug Bernier led off the inning with a double to left off of Gwinnett starter Sean Gilmartin (3-7). With one out, Antoan Richardson lined a double to left, scoring Bernier from second for a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Deibinson Romero led off with a single to left and moved to third on back-to-back walks to Jeff Clement and Dan Rohlfing. Romero scored from third on a wild pitch by Gilmartin to raise the Rochester lead to 2-0.
The big inning for the Red Wings came in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Chris Colabello (14) drilled a solo homer to left to raise the lead to 3-0. Romero followed with a single to left and Clement (10) pounded to two-run homer to right to extend the Red Wings to a 5-0 lead. The next batter, Rohlfing (2) crushed a solo shot to deep right to chase Gilmartin out of the game and put Rochester up 6-0.
The G-Braves (28-43) rallied for three in the top of the sixth off of Rochester starter Cole De Vries (2-2). Tyler Pastornicky (4) and Joey Terdoslavich (14) opened the inning with back-to-back solo homers, cutting the deficit to 6-2. Brandon Boggs lined a one-out single to right and scored from first on a double to deep center by Stefan Gartrell, making it 6-3. However, both bullpens pitched very well in the game, and the three in the sixth by Gwinnett would cap the scoring for the day.
Gilmartin worked 4.1 innings in his 13th start of the season. He gave up six earned runs on nine hits including three homers, walked three and struck out two. Juan Cedeno went 2.2 scoreless innings with two hits and two strikeouts. Wirfin Obispo worked a scoreless bottom of the eighth with one hit and two strikeouts. Obispo has now worked 14.0 straight scoreless innings over his last 10 appearances.
De Vries worked 5.1 innings for the win. He gave up three earned runs on eight hits and struck out five. Blake Martin went 1.2 scoreless, hitless innings with two walks and one strikeout. Michael Tonkin worked the top of the ninth with two strikeouts.
At the plate, the G-Braves were led by Todd Cunningham, Terdoslavich and Boggs who each had two hits.
Colabello, Romero, Rohlfing and Bernier each had a pair of hits for the Red Wings.
