Special Photo Elias Gomez recently received a silver medal during the NAACP High School Culinary Competition at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
NORCROSS -- What do you get when you combine Asian-inspired dishes with rustic Italian cuisine? If Chefs Victoria Martinez and Elias Gomez are cooking, it's sure to be delicious no matter what.
The young people proved their mettle during the NAACP High School Culinary competition, which was held recently at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
Meadowcreek High School's culinary instructor Simone Byron said the two -- both recently graduated seniors of the school -- are "hungry to succeed."
"They just excel at everything they do, and it's been a pleasure working with them," Byron said.
Martinez, 18, won the gold medal and Gomez, also 18, got a silver medal for their dishes. As part of the competition, they were required to do a 5-minute presentation on their culinary background and discuss how they came up with the idea for the prepared food.
For winning the state level event, Martinez will travel to Disney World in July as part of the national competition.
