Norcross grad Taylor Rakes, who just completed a standout career at Tusculum College (Tenn.), was named the Capital One Academic All-America of the Year for NCAA Division II baseball by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Rakes, an economics and international business major, also was a first-team Capital One Academic All-America Team selection for the second straight season. He earned a 3.87 GPA in undergraduate classes and a perfect 4.0 in graduate school. He also was named the South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award twice for baseball and received the SAC Presidents' Award, the highest honored bestowed to a SAC student-athlete, in 2011-12.
On the field, Rakes went 7-2 with a 2.82 ERA this season, striking out 84 batters in 89 innings. He finished with a 26-7 career record, tallying the second-most pitching wins in school history. He was a Daktronics All-Southeast Region second-team selection after this season and twice earned All-SAC honors, in addition to earning two SAC Gold Glove Awards.
