Suwanee woman drowns in Lake Lanier

BUFORD -- Officials said a 55-year-old Suwanee woman drowned Saturday in Lake Lanier after falling off a tube in the Shoal Creek area.

Becky Wallace and three children were being pulled in the tube behind a pontoon boat, when it overturned about 2:15 p.m., according to Georgia DNR spokesman Rick Lavender.

They were ejected from the tube. The children were wearing life jackets, but Wallace was not, Lavender said.

"The woman was trying to assist the juveniles when she went under," he said.

Her death is the third boating-related fatality at Lanier this year, including one in January and one in February.

Lavender said DNR's Critical Incident Reconstruction Team is investigating.

Further details on the incident were not immediately available.
