Cops: Duluth man likely beaten to death

DULUTH — Darinel Martinez Lopez was likely beaten to death, police said.

Lopez’s was found Sunday afternoon in a wooded area near the Bella Vista Apartments in unincorporated Duluth. After merely calling the case a homicide earlier in the week, Gwinnett County police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith provided Wednesday more insight into Lopez’s death.

“The (medical examiner) hasn’t given an official cause yet, but he was not stabbed or shot,” Smith said. “He was severely beaten and we think it’s likely that he died as a result of that.”

Police believe Lopez’s body had only been in the area it was discovered “for a short period of time.” Lopez was not a resident of the apartments at 4105 Satellite Blvd., but did live nearby. His body was found at about 3 p.m. Sunday.

No suspects have been named and few other details have been released.

Anyone with information regarding the case or Lopez’s activities on Sunday is asked to call detectives at 770-513-5300.
