BETHLEHEM — Police believe a Barrow County man shot and killed his mother-in-law Monday before turning the gun on himself.
Barrow County sheriff’s deputies responded to 544 Walton Drive in Bethlehem at about 7:15 p.m. Monday after a woman called 911 to report “hearing her husband, Ian Muriu, fire a weapon inside the residence.” Muriu’s wife reportedly fled the residence for a neighbor’s home but didn’t know if anyone had been hurt by the shooting, Lt. Matt Guthas said.
“Multiple unsuccessful attempts were made to contact persons inside the residence” once authorities arrived, Guthas said. Deputies then entered the home, where they found 66-year-old Diana Freeman, Muriu’s mother-in-law, dead from apparent gunshot wounds.
Muriu, 33, was also dead.
“This investigation is ongoing,” Guthas said. “However, the indications at this point are that Ian Muriu shot and killed Diana Freeman, his mother-in-law, before turning the gun on himself and taking his own life.”
Muriu’s wife was not harmed in the incident.
The Barrow County sheriff’s department is continuing to investigate the events that preceded the shooting, Guthas said.
