Police say body discovered outside apartment complex is a homicide

DULUTH — Pending an autopsy, authorities are treating the death of Darinel Martinez Lopez — found dead in a wooded area near Satellite Blvd. in unincorporated Duluth — as a homicide.

The body of Lopez, 26, was discovered at about 3 p.m. Sunday near the Bella Vista Apartments at 4105 Satellite Blvd. The cause of death was unknown as of Monday, but Gwinnett County police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith told the Daily Post that the body “only seemed to have been there for a short period of time.”

Smith declined to comment on whether or not the body had any visible signs of trauma.

“The case will continue to be investigated as a homicide unless or until the investigation reveals that it was not,” he said.

Lopez was a resident of Duluth, police said, but it was unclear if he lived at the apartments where he was found.

Anyone with information regarding the case or Lopez’s activities on Sunday is asked to call detectives at 770-513-5300.
