Bulls rally past G-Braves 3-2

DURHAM, N.C. — A bases loaded walk and an RBI groundout gave the Gwinnett Braves an early 2-0 lead over Durham on Thursday.

But the Bulls mustered just enough off of G-Braves starter Cody Martin to rally for a 3-2 win, sweeping the short two-game set between in the IL South Division rivals.

Martin pitched five innings, allowing three runs off of five hits with four walks and four strikeouts. It was the third straight start the right hander Martin didn’t last past the fifth inning, a regression from his first three Class AAA starts where he went seven innings and picked up both of his wins. He last appeared in a four-inning relief appearance, earning a save.

The G-Braves scored their first run off of a base-loaded walk to Stefan Gartrell which scored Todd Cunningham in the first inning.

But with the bases loaded and one out, the run was all Gwinnett could muster when Phil Gosselin grounded into a double play.

Cunningham led off the third with his fourth triple of the season and Tyler Pastornicky grounded out to give Gwinnett a 2-0 lead.

Cunningham finished the game 2-for-4 with both G-Braves runs and was the only Gwinnett batter with more than one hit. Pastornicky walked twice on a 1-for-2 night.

Durham scored one run off of Martin in the bottom of the third and took the lead the next inning when Jason Bougeois smacked a two-RBI single to center field.

Durham starter Merrill Kelly earned his fifth win, throwing six innings and the Bulls’ bullpen shut the door not allowing another hit over the final three innings.

Juan Cedeno and Mark Lamm finished the final four innings for Gwinnett. Cedeno didn’t allow a hit over 1 1/3 innings and Lamm pitched a scoreless 1 2/3, giving up two hits and striking out two.
