SUWANEE — Jinkies! Today and Saturday, Suwanee’s Town Center Green will be invaded by meddling kids and green ogres as part of the Suwanee Performing Arts’ seventh annual Broadway in the Park.

This year, the youth-led fundraiser for the organization will feature “Shrek: The Musical” and “Shooby Doo.”

“We always try to pick something that will appeal to audiences of all ages,” Director Patty Etherton said. “The writing for ‘Shrek’ is so fresh and wonderful. I laughed out loud and smiled all the way through it.”

She also added, “When we heard that ‘Shrek: The Musical’ was going to be released for amateur production, I was reminded of how much I loved the movie. The humor is unparalleled: from the short-statured Lord Farquaad to the chatty dramatic donkey to the sarcastic big-hearted ogre … there is humor for all ages, on top of an overall terrific story.”

Previous performances of Broadway in the Park have been “Beauty and the Beast,” “Hairspray,” “Footloose,” “Aladdin” and “High School Musical.” The production is put on by about 75 middle school and high school students, and a stage crew of about 12 people.

“We are tickled to be able to be the first amateur production of (‘Shrek’) in Georgia,” Etherton said. “Folks should come prepared to have a really good time.”

Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for the productions.

The shows are free, but as a fundraiser for SPA, donations are requested to support the nonprofit.

Shrek ears and a dragon call, among other audience-participation items, will be sold.

Tickets for a “swamp” area near the stage will be sold for $10 and available at 4 p.m. today and Saturday.
